A lot has
been going on with the scientific community. physicists announced to the world that they had found
something they had been searching for for nearly 50 years: the elusive Higgs
Boson or as what people call it "The God Particle". This certain
particle gained it name and popularity for its role on giving mass to other
particles. This was not a new theory, this was actually proposed by Peter Higgs
way back 1964. He proposed a theory describing a certain universal field,
similar to electric or magnetic field, that particles interact with. This is
the Higgs field that gives other particles their masses.
There was also
this discovery of the strongest material graphene. This made a lot of materials
scientist excited and labelled it as the "next big thing". With its
promising attributes, it might actually bring end to silicon for computers and
other digital devices and may soon change its course. Much has been made of graphene's potential. It can be used
for anything from composite materials - like how carbon-fibre is used currently
- to electronics.Since its properties were uncovered, more and more scientists
have been keen to work on projects. About 200 companies and start-ups are now involved
in research around graphene. In 2010, it was the subject of about 3,000
research papers.
Im kind of outdated with these discoveries. :) apologies..
What other big
discoveries on physics and other sciences do you know?
